Do you own a reward credit card or are you planning on applying for one? Many people own one or more reward credit cards on their account but not all of them are reaping the rewards they deserve. In this article, let’s discuss some tips on how you can get more from your credit card rewards program and how to make sure that you’ll be redeeming those well-deserved rewards:

Use your discount privileges. Most reward credit cards include discount privileges that are exclusive only to their card holders. Are you aware of the discount privileges your credit card provides? If not, then take the time to review the terms of your card or check online and make sure that you are maximizing the full potential of your credit card. For instance, some credit cards provide printable coupon codes online that you can use in purchasing from selected merchants. Usually, all you need to do is register online in order to access these printable discount coupons and get big savings.

Pay your balance in full each month. Reward credit cards usually come with higher interest rates than regular credit cards so you’ll want to make sure that you’re not carrying a balance over to the next billing cycle. Why would you pay for additional cost on the interest rates when you can avoid it by paying on time? If you need to pay for the interest rate each time, you may actually be paying more than what you earn from your reward credit card.

Stay true to your card’s terms and conditions. Did you know that not paying your bills on time, delaying on your payments or exceeding your credit limit can disqualify you from redeeming your rewards? Yes, most reward credit cards impose this rule on their card holders. If you’re not sure, take out your copy of your credit card’s terms and conditions and review the stipulations on this matter. To be sure that you’ll be eligible to claim your hard-earned points, always stay true to your credit card’s conditions.

Use your reward credit card wisely. To collect points and earn your rewards quickly, obviously you need to use your credit card. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean you need to go out of your way to make unnecessary purchases which can result to credit card debt. Remember, it is crucial for you to pay off your monthly balance regularly to avoid the interest and penalty fees. Exercise caution when using your reward credit card and don’t charge purchases on it just to collect your rewards.

Pay your utilities using your reward credit card. One way to rack up those points without making unnecessary purchases is to use your reward credit card in paying your monthly utilities. These include your electricity, cable, telephone, gasoline, and other services you’re subscribed to. You can also work as a family in collecting points on your reward credit card. If your family members need to make purchases, tell them to charge on your card and pay you the cash instead. This way, you can accumulate more points on your account without breaking your budget.

A closer look at offers from credit card companies and banks – specifically one’s that make you spend money to make money. KXLY4′s Colleen O’Brien reports.
Help answer the question about credit card rewards
Which credit card has a better rewards program during a calendar year?
I'm comparing two credit card reward programs. Card #1 offers 5% rewards on supermarket shopping for about 6 months, and 1.5% on all other purchases. For the other 6 months, the rates are 1% on supermarket and .5% on other purchases.

Card #2 offers 2% all year on supermarket purchases and 1% on everything else.

I realize it depends on what I charge on the card, but overall, which program is better?

With so many reward credit cards to choose from, how can you pick the best one for you? Here are some questions which you can ask yourself before deciding on which reward credit card you’ll be getting for yourself:

What type of reward do you really want? Rewards credit card may offer travel rewards, gas rewards, and cash back rewards. Which type of reward really suits your lifestyle? Make sure that the reward program you’ll choose is something that you can really benefit from.

Does it have an annual fee? Some reward credit cards charge for a high annual fee to continue your membership in the rewards program. If this is the case, does the annual fee off set the rewards you earn for the whole year? For example, if you need to spend $100 or more for the annual fee just to get a $50 reward points, then that’s not much of a benefit. However, there are many reward credit cards today that offer a free annual or a low annual fee plus the chance to earn unlimited reward points which truly make a great deal.

Does the credit card have a fixed rate or a variable rate? Most reward credit cards have a fixed APR or 0% APR as introductory offer. However, when the introductory period ends, a variable APR applies. Bear in mind that this means your interest rate will be based upon the Prime Rate so there is a risk that when the Prime Rate increases, your APR can also be incredibly high. Also, remember that credit cards have a minimum cap which means even if the Prime Rate falls dramatically, your interest will not go below the minimum cap.

How much will it take before you get a reward? Study carefully the point system that applies on the credit card reward program that you choose. You need to be especially aware about the exact conditions when it comes to earning and redeeming rewards even before you sign up the card.

Does the one point per dollar spent policy apply on general purchases or does it only apply to purchases you’ve made from selected stores? If so, then you might want to consider if the affiliate shop you need to purchase from is a store that offers reasonable prices. If you need to buy from an expensive shop every time just to collect points, then you might only be spending more than what you can afford.

Is if there is a limit on the number of points you can earn? Some credit cards give generous points for their cardholders but only for a limited time period. Afterwards, you may be restricted to earning just a few points in your account.

Is there also an expiration period for collecting rewards? Will the rewards be forfeited if not redeemed after a certain time period? Be sure that the credit card you choose will give you enough time for collecting and earning points, especially if it’s a travel rewards card. Otherwise, you might end up collecting points in vain just because you didn’t earn enough points in time. Better yet, choose the rewards credit card that lets you save as much point as you can for an unlimited period.

In 1950, the first credit card that could be used at more than one, specific merchant emerged on the market. The Diner’s Card, started by Frank McNamara, was an invention that got its start when Frank was having a business meeting over dinner, and realized he had forgotten his wallet at home. Of course, the man was extremely embarrassed, and had to call his wife and ask her to bring him his wallet so he could pay for the bill. Then the light bulb over his head turned on, and he thought it would be incredible to have a way to purchase things wherever people shopped, and pay for them later. The Diner’s Card started with 200 card holders, and within a few years- banks and private companies began offering credit cards.

Eventually there were so many credit cards to choose from that the credit lenders had to come up with new ways to stand out from the competition and entice people to select their card over another. Credit card reward programs were born sometime around 1986. Discover card began offering cash back based on the amount of money you spent on your credit card, and the first “frequent flier miles” for credit card users was with Continental Airlines. The frequent flier miles were such a hit that now every airline has joined in the rewards programs, offering discounted trips, free complimentary airfare, travel accident insurance- all based on the amount of spending you do using your credit card.

Now that just about every credit card has some sort of rewards program in place, once again card companies are finding themselves looking for new ways to entice more customers to slide their credit card into their already overflowing card holders in their wallets. Rewards programs have to be turned up a notch, and become so amazing, so absolutely unforgettable that consumers can’t forget them and will apply for and use their card more than the other seven in their wallets when they go shopping!

Currently, the trend in credit card rewards programs appears to be creating cards that offer very specific rewards to cater to what people are doing with their lives. Michelle Shepherd, of MBNA Corp (one of the largest credit card lenders) says the rewards programs are developed with real people in mind, offering something for everyone “…whatever stage in life a person is in, whether it’s someone who’s trying to reduce a mortgage or someone dreaming of going to the Super Bowl”. This is seen in credit cards MBNA offers with rewards programs related to NASCAR and GMAC. Also, Visa offers several credit cards with Disney rewards programs- your spending earns you points towards travel to Disney theme parks and on the Disney cruise line.

Credit card interest rates have begun to rise overall, which is another reason why lenders are trying to entice new customers with their fabulous rewards programs. It would be hard for a card to sell itself to new customers with a high, unattractive interest rate- so lenders have learned to sell the idea of the rewards programs, hoping to gain your interest from that and divert your attention from the not-so-glamorous interest rates.

Keep in mind that while rewards programs can seem very rewarding when you are considering a credit card offer, there is often a lot of information you won’t find out until after you apply for and receive the card. Rewards programs often have limitations, meaning once you reach the ceiling you are no longer eligible for the rewards program benefits- information they don’t normally disclose in the credit card offers you receive in the mail. Also, for rewards programs that allow you to purchase items with points earned based on the spending you do using your credit card, keep in mind you will probably be charged additional money for shipping and handling of those items. For cards that offer travel discounts and airline tickets, many rewards programs require you to then pay transaction fees to redeem them.

Are you trapped into making only minimum payments on your credit cards? I hope not.

Minimum payments decline as the balance on the credit card declines.

Let’s take a credit card with a $2000 balance at 15% interest to use as an example. You would expect to pay about a $40 (2%) monthly payment when you start making your payments:

By making the minimum payment only, it will take you 13 years and 11 months to pay off your credit card and you would expect to pay $2,126 in interest.

However, if you continued paying that $40 until the credit card was paid off, it would only take you 6 years and 6 months to pay off the credit card and you would pay about $1,100 in

interest.

You could save over $1,000 in interest and pay it off in half the time. This is what simply starting with a set payment and sticking to it could save. If you can afford that $40 payment when you start, odds are it won’t hurt you later.

Now, let’s take that a step further. What if you paid just $10 more, $50 instead of $40?

That same credit card could be paid off in 4 years and 7 months with only $740 in interest.

Here is how it breaks down:

Minimum Payments – $4126 total payments – 13 years 11 months

Paying $40 per month – $3100 total payments – 6 years 6 months

Paying $50 per month – $2740 total payments – 4 years 7 months

The fact is that every dollar you add to your payment goes toward the balance of the credit card.

I recently completed a Debt Elimination Summary for a couple that had $46,500 in credit card debt on 6 credit cards. Most people would be considering filing bankruptcy in that situation but this couple were determined to pay it off.

Here are the results of the Summary:

They were already paying $785 per month on the credit cards. They decided they could afford to pay another $200 to eliminate their debt sooner.

Minimum Payments – The credit cards would never be paid off.

Paying $785 per month – $78,761 total payments – 8 years 5 months

Paying $985 per month – $66,059 total payments – 5 years 8 months

Would you have thought that you could pay off over $46,000 in credit card debt in just 5 years and 8 months? I’ve seen this done dozens of times. It can and it does work if you stick to it and quit using your credit cards.

If you have multiple credit cards and would like to pay them off as quickly as possible the best way to do this is to write down your credit card name, balance, interest rate and minimum monthly payment.

Then you must decide which credit card to pay off first. There are two schools of thought on this. Most experts believe that you should pay off your highest interest credit card first. You would definitely pay less in the long run.

However, if you need to see results quick to give you an incentive to keep going you could start with the credit card with the lowest balance.

Which ever way you choose, simply add as much money as you can spare to that credit card until it is paid off. Then take the amount you were paying to the first credit card and add it to the next credit card payment and so on until they are all paid in full.

Interest, late fees and penalties are wasted money. The only way to avoid this is to use cash to make your purchases when ever you can.

With the increasing popularity of credit cards in America, it’s no surprise that credit card companies and banks continue to flood the market with all manner of cards–rewards credit cards, cash back credit cards, 0% APR credit cards–all in an effort to appeal to as many potential cardholders as possible by offering a wide variety of incentives for use. The major problem with the strategy, however, is that there’s often little explanation of exactly how credit card rewards work in their respective programs: what’s the difference, for example, between cash back cards and rewards credit cards? And which card will, in the end, save you more? The variety and sheer number of rewards programs leaves some potential cardholders confused about the actual market value of their “points” values.

The most prevalent credit card rewards plans out there today fall into two different categories — percentage-based rewards and points-based systems. The former offers a percentage of your money back on purchases in certain targeted categories, most commonly gas, travel, and in some cases entertainment. The latter offers a series of “points” for all purchases made, which can eventually be redeemed for reimbursements on various expenses, most commonly travel. The percentage rewards plans are fairly straightforward (except for a few obscure snags, such as how your cash actually gets back to you and how much you can earn in any given year through credit card rewards), but in the case of “points”, it’s often difficult to determine exactly what you’re getting for your purchases using a points-based rewards credit card.

But in the end, it all comes down to the numbers, specifically the math formula used to calculate the rewards. A good percentage-based rewards credit card will offer anywhere from 3-5% back on targeted purchases (again, commonly gas and travel.) If you spend $1,000 at the pump in a given year (which, with current gas prices, is a pretty low amount to spend on gas in a year), you’ll earn $50 back in rewards at a 5% rate. For a year’s worth of gas purchases, $50 isn’t a huge amount of money, but it’ll fill you up twice and it’s certainly better than nothing.

Compare this to “points” systems. One points system (from Chase’s Free Cash Rewards Visa) offers a rewards rate of 2,500 points for $25, with one point earned for every dollar of purchases. That’s only a 1% rate of return on the money you put into the card. Certain airline credit cards offer a slightly better deal, such as American Express’s Blue Sky, which allows you to redeem points (again, one dollar per point) in 7,500 increments for a $100 reimbursement on travel expenses, meaning about a 1.3% rate of return. Again, even a low rate of return can help to offset any expenses you may incur, and can make certain purchases essentially free. But 1.3% versus 5% — you do the math.

On non-targeted purchases, points systems and percentage rewards credit cards even out, since most percentage reward cards offer a 1% rate of return on the majority of non-targeted purchases you make. And the “points” cards can offer a few incentives that a percentage rewards credit card can’t, such as bonus points on sign-up, anywhere from 1,000 to 15,000 and up (depending on the value of a given points system, of course.) But, assuming that you frequently purchase the targeted items on a percentage rewards credit card (and who doesn’t make frequent gas, travel, and entertainment purchases?), you’ve got a slight edge with percentage-based rewards programs.

Check all of the fine print and consider your specific purchasing needs, of course, but remember one of the first rules of finance: when dealing with credit card rewards, always look at the long term and make sure to do the math.

If your business still does not have a merchant account that allows you to offer full credit card services, you are turning your back on profits. Just take a look at all of your competitors. All of those that pose serious competition accept credit card payments. Those that do not have credit card services do not have great sales figures to show, either. Even statistics point to the fact that companies that have credit card services earn much more than companies that do not have credit card services. The average credit card sale is $40 while the average cash sale is only $9. That means you are losing potentially $31 per sale.

You may also be spending more by accepting only cash and check payments in your business. The processing of cash and checks has been found to be more costly, requiring more manpower in handling. Studies have shown that the average processing cost of credit card payments is only 2.7% of a transaction while the average processing cost of checks is 4% of a transaction and the average processing cost of cash is 4.8% of a transaction. Once again, you are leaking profits by refusing to accept credit card payments.

So how do you accept credit card payments in your business? This is where credit card services come in. The old route is to apply for a merchant account in a bank. You will then have to lease the software and equipment necessary to actually process payments and send the data to your account. If you want to accept credit card payments online, you need to apply to a payment gateway that allows real time credit card authorization for online transactions. You should ensure that your payment gateway is compatible with the bank or financial institution where you have your merchant account, and with the software and equipment you have leased.

In choosing the bank or financial institution for your merchant account, consider their expertise in combating fraud and reducing chargebacks. Also make sure that they are experienced in handling merchant accounts with online transactions.

If you are a small business owner, stick to a bank or financial institution that caters to small businesses rather than large companies. You may be able to get better rates and packages designed for your specific niche.

There are options for credit card services that offer everything you need in one easy package. You will not have to deal with various entities or go through various procedures. Often, these options also have added benefits, among them, quick reporting on your credit card sales figures. They may also offer interest on your credit card sales income, even up to money market rates.

One very important feature of your credit card services that you may not know of is that it can automatically qualify you to avail of small business loans. Once you have established a record of sales through credit, most credit card services will allow you to make cash advances that are practically like getting previously approved small business loans without having to put up any required collateral. The credit card services consider your future income through credit card sales as your collateral. This can go a long way in further growing your business.

Payment will not be a problem, either. For as long as you have sales through credit payments, you automatically get to pay your small business loans. It does not matter how much your sales are. Your payments are automatically deducted as a percentage of your sales. You are always covered.

Now do you still need further convincing on the benefits of credit card services for your business?

Practically everyone in the United States has credit cards. From teenagers to retirees, almost everyone has at least one credit card. Everywhere we go we see ads – in the television, radio, newspapers, billboard advertisements – on credit cards. Some credit cards are even mailed directly to our homes. But what are credit cards and why should you have one?

Simply stated, a credit card (or for many, just known as credit, is a financial arrangement between you, the consumer or the card user, and an institution (in most instances a bank), that you have to borrow instant money from them and promises that you will repay them back in the future. The institution agrees to that it will give the money you need and expects you to pay them over a certain time period, like on a monthly basis. Your payment will include not just the entire money you owed the group or institution but also an additional charge that is known as an interest rate, if you are unable to pay your full balance on time monthly.

Credit can provide various services, making it an indispensable tool for today’s consumers. These include:

Convenience. You saw this wonderful dress in a shop. Perfect for tonight’s party, you thought. But you don’t have money right now. Thanks to your card, you can buy anything you want right now. Credit cards give you that wonderful allowance not to bring that much cash and to order goods from catalogs. In addition, many of the online-based shops and stores, such as Amazon.com, mainly accept payment using credit.

Emergency Protection. For emergency situation, credit cards can be an extremely helpful tool that could be your friend that could pay for your emergency needs, like when your car conked out in the road, or your mother gets hospitalized, or any emergency situations that you need money but can’t get it from the usual means.

Putting you in the right budget. Want to keep a detailed record of your expenditures? Credit cards can do that.

Security. In today’s world, carrying large cash has become a problem. If your cash gets lost, there’s no way you can retrieve it. Compared with credit cards, money cannot be returned back when it got lost or stolen. If your card, for example, got broken or it got lost or someone stole it from you, you can always ask for a credit card termination or cancellation. You will have another card, a new one that will replace it in a few days.

Traveling. If you’re quite a traveler, whether across the town or country, or outside the US, it is relatively easier to travel with a credit card.

When used responsibly, credit cards are can help improve our daily lives. With cards, life could be so much easier.

To achieve financial independence, experts encourage even currently employed individuals to consider entrepreneurship. Setting up your own business, no matter how small, is touted as one of the best ways toward building the foundation for wealth. Those who are concerned about having a safety net need not take the plunge recklessly. One can start setting up a small business even while employed.

Of crucial use to small businesses are credit card services and small business loans. The entrepreneur needs to know how to avail of these tools and how to effectively wield them for maximum business growth.

Credit Card Services

A small business would do well to get reputable credit card services in order to prosper in the current business climate. Availing of credit card services will enable it to accept both credit card and debit card payments. This is true either for brick-and-mortar businesses or internet based online businesses. After all, most consumers nowadays routinely use credit cards or debit cards for payment purposes. It only makes good business sense to be well-equipped for the needs of credit card users and debit card users as well as for the needs of customers who pay in cash.

Merchant services provide credit card services covering a wide range of solutions for the processing of credit cards and debit cards as payment options. These credit card services include traditional terminal equipment at point of sale, where credit cards or debit cards are swiped. It also includes software and high speed IP solutions for both traditional commerce and e-commerce. Credit card and debit card payments can, therefore, be accepted in person or through the internet, by phone or by fax.

Small Business Loans

Any business – whether a small start-up business, a medium-scaled one or a big business company – will be needing an infusion of additional capital sooner or later. Additional capital is always needed for expansion, additional inventory, additional manpower, new systems, new equipment or a new physical layout.

Capital is not always easy to come by, though. The original investors’ personal coffers may have been emptied by the earlier outlays. Prospective investors may not be keen on shelling out funds in times of crisis. Businesses, therefore, have no choice but to seek business loans.

Getting business loans is a difficult process. Even small business loans are not readily approved. Be prepared to present a lot of documentation and paperwork. For small business loans, the proprietor’s personal credit history is taken into account and related references need to be submitted. Of course, the company’s financial statements are just as important in proving the feasibility of the business and its capacity to repay its business loans. Having a detailed business plan will show your business strategies and projections, demonstrating your business acumen.

Unfortunately, even with all the requirements completed, applications for business loans – including small business loans – are, more often than not, disapproved.

Solutions

Some merchant services provide a comprehensive solution for the needs of small businesses in relation to credit card services and small business loans. The set up is elegantly simple. A small business need only avail of the company’s credit card services to be eligible for merchant cash advances. These cash advances are actually small business loans, except that there is no need to go through the complicated application process for business loans. Repayment is made very easy and worry-free, too. A certain small percentage is built into the credit card processing rates to take care of the advances. This way, repayment is actually done automatically in a very affordable manner and according to income flow.

Small business owners would, indeed, be wise to look into these timely business solutions.
