My Guide to Online Credit Cards

‘Online credit card usage’ – convenience at its best. Commerce and technology, combined as a one package – this is what online credit cards are. With the advent of internet, the knowledge and communication barriers were broken. Also, with internet, came the concept of e-shops or virtual shops that existed only on the internet. You could shop at these shops by making use of their online credit card payment-acceptance ability. Once the online credit card payments were verified and approved, the goods got delivered to your door. This is what we call convenience at its best.

With more and more e-shops getting setup everyday, online credit card usage is becoming even more popular. The possibility of receiving online credit card payments has given a totally new dimension to shopping. Now, you can not only shop from the comfort of your home, you can even get discounts on these products. This is really amazing. No need to bother about the weather, no need to worry about the traffic jams or any other thing. Just go to an e-shop, select a product, make use of their online credit card payment-acceptance facility to make the payment and be ready to receive the goods at your doorstep. With online credit card processing facility, starting a business (an online business) has become just unbelievably easy.

However, there is nothing without pitfalls. One of the pitfalls of online credit card usage is the possibility of online credit card fraud. This online credit card fraud can happen in two ways. The first one is related to the company, on whose website you made online credit card payment for purchase of goods; this company itself could be fraudulent i.e. it could take the online credit card payment from you but not deliver the goods to you.

Moreover, they could use the details of your credit card (received through the filling up of online credit card payment form by you) for fraudulent purposes. The second type of fraud is committed by fraudsters who use various software/devices to capture the details of online credit card payments (as you enter them on the online credit card payment form of a website).

This software’s are popularly known as spyware and these fraudsters as online spies. The Spyware works by capturing keystrokes or taking screenshots of whatever you do on your computer and then passes it on to the spy. However, there are anti-spyware software’s available which can be used to counter such spyware.

So, the advent of online credit card usage facility is a boon to us. However, you must exercise caution when making online credit card payments e.g. don’t access your bank accounts or make online credit card payments from internet cafes (unless you are absolutely sure about the credentials of the internet cafe).

Help answer the question about online credit card

Does paying a credit card statement in two installments online hurt my credit rating?
I have an online credit card account (at, let's say Chase), and I have a $600 credit card statement, and I have three weeks to pay it off. If I pay $150 right away and $450 a week after the statement date, will they report a late $450 payment to the bureaus or will I be all paid off as long as I pay the statement balance before the grace period ends?

There are a number of different options for accepting credit cards online. Your payment processor and methods can be very important to your business' overall success so it's not a decision I would make lightly.

The most effective payment system in my opinion is to have a payment gateway setup for your business, this will basically allow customers to pay in a variety of ways and give the most overall flex-ability. For instance you could easily setup product links where the customer would like the link and pay directly from your gateway, or you could integrate a shopping cart into the process to easily handle customer orders. You can even manually key in a credit card if someone gives it over the phone or in-person.

All of this takes very little knowledge and requires no advanced programming skill, any good processor will set you up with a solution to help you achieve your desired results and most have an advanced gateway that will allow you to simply choose your options and insert an HTML/Java Script or something similar without doing much coding at all. It's really basic, in-fact I've worked with several business owners who had almost no computer knowledge and never had a website but could easily arrange online payments using the right system.

PayPal is a decent option, and to be honest it's always good to have a PayPal account for those people who are firm believers in there system. However they don't offer as much flex-ability, aren't as professional, and have a less than satisfactory rating with most business who use them for payment processing.

Remember in there system the buyer has all the protection and if you run a business' that is even slightly susceptible to fraud I would be very careful with PayPal.

Besides there poor fraud management and high target rate from scammers, they also have poor management solutions to handling client accounts. They often Lock, Freeze, or Close accounts that experience high volume or have had a few problems. Even if you've never had a dispute they might randomly lock your account for any number of reasons and hold on to your money for up to 6 months.

Anyway, before this becomes a novel I would suggest doing some research online regarding online merchant accounts. They sound like the perfect solution for you, and as a business owner myself I can personally recommend Prosper Merchant Services.

Even if you don't decide to process with them they have been very helpful to me and some of my clients and I'm sure they would be happy to answer any questions or concerns you might have.

Forgot to mention that all processors that allow you to accept credit cards will be taking a cut of your money, PayPal's fees are quite a bit higher than most since they aren't an official merchant provider… but you can expect rates from 2.5-3% on average for e-commerce. Even if you run a retail business and are setup with your local bank or something they will still be taking a cut, that's how they stay in business!

Contact your credit card issuer. They will cancel the compromised card and issue a new one. They will also send you a form that you will need to fill out for fraud. They may also want you to file a police report.
Order your credit reports from all 3 credit reporting agency's! Go over them with a fine toothed comb! You may need to put a fraud alert on them.

Make sure they are a major store. Smaller websites that are less popular are less trustworthy.

Ask around. Look online for reviews of the website.

It's your billing address – it's to keep someone who has found your credit card from using it online to make purchases.
