Help answer the question about prepaid credit card

Is a Prepaid credit card still considered a major credit card?
I'm fixing to start traveling out of town alot for my job and they are issuing prepaid credit cards with our names on them (so they look just like a credit card) for our spending throughout the trip on rooms, food, etc…. Are these cards still considered major credit cards? Will I be able to book rooms with these?

I have to say that yes, it is difficult to get a loan for a car in that age range, but it's also difficult to pay the interest on a credit card. There should be no reason to not want to get a loan, so I might wonder if maybe you can't get a loan. I know credit cards are easier to get, but they are terribly messy. Even if you put on the one balance, the cost will be horrible, but if you add any additional balance, or worse yet a cash withdrawal, it will only apply your payments to the lower interest rate. (Example: You put $5000 on there for a car at 19% interest, but then do a cash withdrawal at an ATM for $60. The cash withdrawal will charge the highest legal interest rate (Probably around 25%), the interest will start immediately on the cash, and every payment you make will go toward the 19% first, and the higher interest rate won't get paid down until very last. They have to make the most money they can, you know.

There is a very good alternative if you will have a decent number of subscribers. The Authorize.Net payment gateway has a built in recurring billing module that will automatically charge your subscribers each month (or whatever period of time you select) for you.

Working with Authorize.Net is fairly simple and you can even integrate it seamlessly into your website so your subscribers never leave your website during sign up. They offer two APIs that allow you to charge your subscriber for their first payment and setup their recurring billing subscription.

As far as costs go I'd say the average fee for the Authorize.Net account would be about $30/month (including the recurring billing module). This would be in addition to your merchant account fees. So it would cost a bit more then Paypal but it would be easier and more professional.

If you credit remains good – no lates, score higher than 720 – you should be able to qualify for credit limits of $5,000 to $10,000 from various card issuers provided your income can support that.

These offers will be fewer and farther between right now because the cost of funds for credit card companies and other lenders is very high right now. Similar to mortgage lenders, these firms securitize their debt and sell it on the secondary market, and because of the subprime debacle, no one wants to buy securitized debt right now. That makes it less profitable when customers carry a balance – the card issuers are making a lot more money on the fees they charge.

So, assuming you can be approved for new credit cards, you can do several balance transfers and lower your interest rates. Be very careful to pay on time and don't close those other accounts. You have to keep your credit score high so that the new companies don't jack up your interest rates.

If your credit is suffering – for example, you have late pays and your score is in the 600s or lower – then you might try negotiating directly with the card companies. They will only do this if you have serious delinquency problems, though. And, don't expect them to be very generous. They are not going to settle for pennies on the dollar. You will be very lucky if they agree to even a 20% reduction in the balance, and payment would be due immediately.

A last resort is to initiate a debt management plan with an NFCC-accredited legitimate non-profit consumer credit counseling firm. NFCC stands for National Foundation for Credit Counseling. They can be reached at http://www.nfcc.org.

I looked at the terms and conditions for the VISA gift card and this might be what caused you grief when you were trying to buy online.

"Choice: Visa Gift cards can be used everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted – that means millions of places to choose the perfect gift. "

Here are some more important instructions regarding the use of a VISA gift card.

    "Online or phone purchases
To make an online or phone purchase, you will need to register your card. You can do this by either calling the issuing provider, or by visiting their website. This information should have been supplied to you when you received the card. It may also be printed on the back of the card.
When you make an online or phone purchase, the name, address, and phone number you use will need to be exactly the same as the information you provided when registering your card.
If the information you provide differs from what was provided when the card was registered, the transaction may be declined.
You can verify or update your information by visiting the card provider's Web site, or by contacting them using the toll-free number provided in your card materials.
    Special transactions"

According to the new filing laws, you have to receive credit counseling before you can file for either Chapter 7 or Chapter 13. I would get a copy of my credit report from all three bureaus before I'd go the route of Bankruptcy. Who seized your account? If its the IRS, that has nothing to do with your credit. I would, for now, withdraw my accessible funds. Don't open another account, you are being traced by your social security number.

There are alternatives to filing bankruptcy. You can negotiate a settlement with your past due accounts. You obviously need to go through some sort of credit counseling program. If you earn over 100K, you are in a position to pay down your debt. If you have problems with overspending, try budgeting your money.

The key is to know what you owe and to whom you owe it. Then comes the part that takes some time, paying it off and repairing your credit.

How long ago was college? Items on your report "expire" in most states after 7 years of last activity. If it has been longer than that, the collections company has no right to try to collect. You can even request the collections company prove the validity of this debt. It will buy you some time, and will force the company to cease collections efforts for a minute until the debt is proven valid or invalid.

Little trade secret: Never give the name of your employer to a collections company. They use this information to move forward with garnishments. Always say, "I'm currently unemployed and not receiving unemployment".

You need to separate yourself from that checking account . You should request, right now, that your wages be given to you in the form of a paycheck and not have them direct deposited. Also, it may be a good idea to cash the check from the bank it was drawn off of instead of your bank. If it is the same bank, spend a few bucks and go to a check cashing joint.

  8. Shytey1 Says:

If you HAVE to take that amount of cash – split it into as many places as possible like a money belt, thigh strap, day pack, large rucksack and pockets.

However, I've travelled in some very remote places and you'll always stumble on an ATM eventually. I tend to keep around $200 on me.

  9. Bruce Almighty Says:

Prepaid debit/credit cards are loaded with fees – fees for registering the card, re-loading the card, inactivity, and on and on. They are generally a good idea for people who (1) can't get a credit card due to poor or no credit history, or (2) have trouble managing their money, and would be charged more in interest and/or over limit fees than they are paying in prepaid fees.

Why pay to use your own money?

A good alternative is to open a checking account that comes with a debit card. Opt out of the overdraft option (i.e. if you try to spend more than is in your account, do not give them permission to let the transaction go through). Just re-load that checking account with more money when necessary.
